Mike Sanderson and Leonie Philip of the Loos for Islington campaign out campaigning
A GROUP of campaigners, calling themselves the Toileteers, are asking: “Is Islington Council taking the pi**?!”.
The group got their message out at the Angel while holding up banners about the lack of working toilet facilities. This currently stand at zero, they said, with a toilet on the Green still boarded up and the loo in Newington Green still unfinished, despite promises to have it ready by January.
The Toileteers go out at least once a month speaking to members of the public about their concerns.
They are calling for Islington to publish and deliver a public toilet strategy and want to see local shopping centres such as the Nag’s Head include a public toilet in their provision. They are also calling for new public toilets in town centres like Archway.
As part of Islington’s promised £1 million overhaul of its public toilets, it has pledged to have all its new automated toilets ready by September.
Three toilets for disabled people – at the Brickworks Community Centre, Sobell Leisure Centre and 222 Upper Street – will be ready by March.
“Work is under way to make sure Islington gets the public toilet network it needs,” a spokesperson said, recommending people download the Toilets4London app, which shows the location of available loos.
