Top director’s film for Elena
Project will feature Elena Salvoni, maitre d’ who became known as ‘the Queen of Soho’

MAMMA Mia! movie director Phyllida Lloyd has revealed she has made a new film about a famous restaurateur that she once lived near to in Islington.
The project is about Elena Salvoni (pictured), who was known as ‘the Queen of Soho’ for her time running renowned eatery L’Etoile, later renamed Elena’s L’Etoile.
The maitre d’ to the stars lived in Noel Road, near Angel, and died aged 91 in 2016.
Ms Lloyd, who also directed The Iron Lady, a film about Margaret Thatcher, said she had remained busy during the coronavirus disruption.
The name of the film about Ms Salvoni was revealed, nor a release date, but Ms Lloyd told The Times: “It’s not the sort of thing you will see at your local Vue, it’s social history more than anything.”
Stephen Fry once described Ms Salvoni as “my second mother and the kindest woman in London”.
