Camden Town WFC will take on Ebbsfleet United in the FA Cup this weekend [Sophia Demetriades]

IT’S all eyes on the Women’s FA Cup this Sunday – and few teams in the famous old competition should be feared more than Camden Town WFC.

So far this season, Town have won five games out of five in all competitions – four of which were on the road – and all without conceding a single goal.

Last weekend, they thumped Clapton Community 4-0 in Division One North of the London & South East Regional League. It means that, as well as keeping five clean sheets, Town have now scored a staggering 24 goals.

Up next is a trip to Ebbsfleet United in the second round qualifying of the Women’s FA Cup, and Camden have every reason to feel confident as they prepare to tackle a side that plays in the same division as them, and have lost their opening two league games of the season.

“It’s a competition I absolutely love because of its history, its heritage and the opportunity it gives clubs like ours to write another chapter in our story,” said Town chairman Richard Mahoney, who lives in Highbury.

“Ebbsfleet away will be a completely different challenge and one we have enormous respect for, but we’ll go there with confidence in this team and with absolutely nothing to fear. These are the occasions we want to be part of as a football club, and we can’t wait for this Sunday.”

A crowd of more than 400 fans saw Town topple Clapton Community in commanding fashion at the Old Spotted Dog Ground.

The breakthrough arrived just ahead of the half-hour mark when striker Andrea Chan, signed from Islington Borough during the summer, produced a deadly finish from close range.

Sustained pressure resulted in Camden doubling their advantage with the aid of an own goal just before the break. Maria Paz Vera then added her name to the scoresheet within a minute of the restart, before Ginny Somers stepped off the subs’ bench to complete the rout.

After adding another one to her tally, Paz Vera was quick to praise the strength in depth that Town have now assembled.

The Paraguayan forward, who lives in West Hampstead, said: “I’ve been at Camden for a long time, and I know what this club is capable of, but there is something different about this group.

“The quality we have throughout the squad, the competition for places and the standards in training are probably the highest I’ve experienced here.

“We’re still at the beginning of the season, and we know we haven’t achieved anything yet, but you can feel that something is building.

“There is a real belief within this squad. If we keep working, stay together and keep demanding more from each other, I think success is just around the corner.”

Battling Borough ready to dig deep once again

ISLINGTON Borough will also be back in Women’s FA Cup action this Sunday when they travel to Brighton to take on Montpelier Villa in their second round qualifier.

Borough, who play in the Premier Division of the Greater London Women’s League, have shown tremendous fortitude during this season’s run in the competition, winning both of their previous rounds via nail-biting penalty shootouts.

Back in August, Michael Kelly’s spirited squad sealed a 4-3 victory from the spot over East Thurrock Community Women after the preliminary round cup clash in Essex had finished 1-1 in normal time.

Borough were then involved in a thrilling first round qualifier earlier this month when they twice came from behind to draw 3-3 against Berkhamsted Ladies.

The Mighty Reds then held their nerve once again as they won 7-6 on penalties at the Glencar Community Stadium in Hertfordshire.
