Town Hall website is hit by hackers

Friday, 21st July 2017 — By Emily Finch

HACKERS crippled the Town Hall’s website in two cyber-attacks on Saturday and Monday.

The distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) took some of the website offline after hackers flooded it with traffic.

To protect sensitive data, council officers temporarily disabled the online payments system used by residents to pay their council tax and other services such as parking permits.

Cllr Andy Hull, Islington Council’s executive member for finance and resources, said: “There is no reason to believe that any money or sensitive data has been lost or stolen, nor has ransomware been used. We are now investing in additional technical defences against this type of attack, above and beyond the level of defence routinely employed by local authorities in the UK.

“We have reported these incidents to the National Crime Agency and the National Cyber Security Centre and are working with them to try to identify and address the source of the attacks.”

The Town Hall restored the online payment system on Wednesday and extended payment deadlines for those affected by the hack.
