AFTER a bus broke down in the snow this week, passengers and passers-by worked together to get it moving again.

Joanna Sargent, from Highbury, was outside with her husband when the No 19 bus became stuck in the snow on Monday evening.

The bus, which travels from Battersea Bridge to Finsbury Park, ground to a halt at the bottom of Highbury Park Road. Ms Sargent, who lives close to the road, was already out in the snow helping struggling cars get up the hill.

A group of 10 to 15 people quickly came together to help when they saw the bus begin to slide at the bottom of the hill. Ms Sargent explained how the group tried to help the bus keep grip of the road.

She said: “I got a bucket from inside the house, filled it with grit, and put it under the wheels to give it some traction.” When the grit ran out, she said that a nearby restaurant offered cardboard, which the group then tried to slide under the bus wheels.

Ms Sargent said: “There were so many people stopping and helping. A real community, people not knowing each other all just coming together.” She added: “I just think that community spirit is alive and kicking and it’s great.”
