"Outstanding" church narrowly misses cash prize

UNION Chapel – a functioning church and live music venue in Upper Street – narrowly missed out on £150,000 this week after being nominated for an award in recognition of its approach to staying connected with people during lockdown.

The venue was nominated for its “outstanding capacity to adapt to the pandemic”, although was not the final winner of the prize given out by the Gulbenkian Foundation in Old Street on Wednesday.

Michael Chandler, CEO of Union Chapel, said: “These last two years have been the most challenging, however we are proud of what has been achieved with and for our communities hardest hit, in supporting people and affecting local change, and our role in pioneering ticketed live-streaming. Being shortlisted is a real affirmation of everything we’ve done.
