Trade unionists gathered at the Town Hall in Upper Street ahead of Saturday’s march and rally

THE steps of Islington Town Hall were crowded last Thursday as the Islington Trades Union Council rallied ahead of a major protest this weekend.

Trade unionists met to raise awareness of the “We Demand Better” rally taking place on Saturday in central London, in protest at spiralling energy bills and low public sector pay.

Leader of Islington Council Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz joined the demonstration to deliver a speech in support of the campaign.

Unions are demanding a “real pay rise” for every worker, the banning of zero-hour contracts, ending racism at work, taxing energy profits, raising universal credit and strengthening union bargaining rights.

The hot weather is set to cool off by the time the rally begins in Parliament Square.

The demonstration is set to assemble at 10.30am tomorrow (Saturday) in Portland Place, near the BBC’s main building, before the march leaves around midday, moving through Trafalgar Square to a rally in Parliament Square which is due to start at 1pm.
