POSTED: November 5, 2021

THE Camden New Journal group is looking to hire a full-time news journalist.

The role will be on the Islington Tribune newspaper and website.

This is an opportunity for somebody looking for a more senior role on a local paper with around 1+ year experience of gathering and writing news stories.

More important than journalism course qualifications and experience, however, will be an enthusiasm and imagination for working on a small, independent newspaper, a natural curiosity and the ability to write clearly.

The successful applicant will work with the editor on news-editing the paper each week. The reporter will be capable of covering both diary events and self-starter ideas.

This is NOT a breaking news, online role. Reporters on the team will be encouraged to go and meet people, and source their own stories beyond social media hints and police press releases. Not all stories are on  Twitter.

They will be good all rounders, capable of covering crime, local politics and more unusual stories too; some stories will be picked up by national newspapers, others will be small community events.

At times, the successful applicant will be required to assist our sister titles, the Camden New Journal and the Westminster Extra. In the same vein, staff on those two papers will sometimes assist the Tribune‘s output.

Applicants should have a working knowledge of our readership areas, a good appreciation of current affairs, online skills and a strong news sense

They must have a clear writing style which cuts through the jargon. Being able to interview people with both sensitivity and scrutiny, as required, is also a must-have skill.

There is some flexible working, but there will be some evening work and occasional weekend duties depending on how different stories develop.

CVs and covering letters with suggestions about what applicants can bring to the role should be sent to the editor Richard Osley,

Please mark all emails ‘Reporter Vacancy’.

Reporters who have recently applied for a position at the Islington Tribune or Camden New Journal do not need to send a new application.

Salary will be dependent on experience but competitive with local newspaper industry rates.

There is no closing date as we are looking to find the right candidate as soon as possible. This page will be updated when the position has been filled.

Depending on the number of applications received, we may not be able to reply to all applicants but we will endeavour to do so.
