VETERANS and families of former servicemen and women came together to mark VJ Day on Sunday, 76 years on from the end of the Second World War.

They gathered at Islington Green for a two-minute silence and wreath-laying in honour of those who served in the war.

Pageant master Peter McCafferty said: “We are full of gratitude and admiration for the ultimate sacrifice shown by so many in such awful conditions to secure the 76 years of ‘tomorrows’ we have known of freedom and peace.”
