• THE radio play Ladies sounds brilliant (A shock to the cistern, January 27).

It’s hard to believe though that in the 21st century we’re now fighting to keep toilets open. Councils believe they’re saving money but they’re not – as people have to go somewhere; alleys, as in the early 20th century, are becoming a “necessary” once again.

I’m the founder of Public Toilets UK, a Facebook campaign to highlight the importance of public loos to our health – both mental and physical.

Many councils do appreciate the advantages but sadly many don’t, which means that many of us have either to plan our journeys based on toilet locations or stay at home.

Everyone needs access to a toilet several times a day but toilet provision is still not a statutory requirement. Amazing, eh?

Three cheers to Alison Steadman, who is willing to raise her head above the parapet and speak out. If more well-known people followed her example it’s likely that councils would be tripping over themselves to provide facilities.
