ISLINGTON Council is set to consider an expansion of its property licensing scheme to help hold private rental landlords accountable for making sure their properties are up to scratch.

The scheme, which currently only covers Finsbury Park, Hillrise, and Tollington wards, would aim to stop rogue landlords from neglecting or exploiting their private tenants.

All landlords would be required to register and meet licence conditions. Failure to do so would result in penalties, including fines or criminal convictions.

A public consultation is now open, and residents, private renters, and landlords are invited to share their views.

Islington’s housing chief Councillor John Woolf said: “The success of our current licensing schemes has shown that they can make a real difference.

“Now, we need your input to shape the future of these schemes”.

He added: “We are committed to doing everything we can to protect private renters and ensure landlords provide good-quality accommodation”.
