Newly-elected Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer

• AT last we have an opposition in parliament, not that there is much to oppose right now.

Pouring money into the economy was Jeremy Corbyn’s plan for Labour, after a decade of austerity, and now Boris Johnson and his acolytes have been forced to do it as jobs disappear in the Covid-19 crisis.

So my suggestion is that Sir Keir Starmer calls for the creation of a coalition government at least for the duration of this massive crisis.

Quite simply, we need all our politicians to be on the same page in managing our way through the massive changes needed, and this should also ensure that government policies are agreed and avoid any arguments about some of the actions.

But I think this should be a long-term solution, as we will need a solid consensus when we start trying to rebuild our economy and society after this devastating crisis.

I think even some Tories were surprised by the appalling situation of the lives of millions of our people, barely surviving day-to-day with zero-hours non-jobs, insecure gig workers, and the rest just about managing in normal times, and now suffering as their jobs disappear.

Sir Keir, Angela Rayner and the Labour shadow cabinet has some solid politicians with sensible ideas, and we will need all the intelligence we can muster as we try to put our country’s economy back together if or when the present crisis is over.

A better future must be on offer for all of our people, with job security and conditions of employment needing vast improvements to avoid the disasters which many people’s lives have become in recent weeks.

We are all in it together, society that is.
