CHARITIES across Islington were stepping up during the festive period to make sure that no one felt forgotten about.
The People’s Army, which distributes food parcels to more than a hundred households each week and provides hot meals for the homeless community, was busier than ever, with volunteers flocking from across the borough to help out.
Hazel Jhugroo, who has been running the charity for four years, said they sent out 152 parcels, filled with food and presents for children.
She said: “Obviously we have our usual clients who we send parcels to every week, but during Christmas, you get more people who might pop up and ask you to help out. We normally don’t say no around Christmas time.”
On New Year’s Eve, the charity made sure that everyone had a chance to celebrate, handing out meals that had been cooked by Islington residents to those experiencing homelessness.
With a menu that included spring rolls, chilli and rice, and chocolate cake, more than a hundred people were able to ring in the New Year having enjoyed a hot meal.
“It was amazing,” said Ms Jhugroo, “The People’s Army has been like a big group of friends. If you don’t have friends, you have us. One of our volunteers brings his speakers down on his bike and we listen to music and dance.”
She further encouraged people to give some of their time to charities in 2025. “Obviously it’s nice when people come and help out during the holidays, but I’d encourage them to do a little bit more,” Ms Jhugroo said. “If you’ve got a day off work now and again, come and help out. It’s fun. For me, it really helps my mental health to know that I’m helping other people.”
