We must clean up the air, for our health – and our hospitals

Friday, 11th February 2022

• IT was reported this week that all 291 hospitals and medical centres in London breach World Health Organisation nitrogen dioxide and PM2.5 air pollution limits.

London’s air pollution is materially caused by cars, vans and heavy goods vehicles.

Enfield Council are delivering an active travel network that will enable thousands of National Health Service staff to walk and cycle safely to work at North Middlesex Hospital.

These improvements have been supported by the hospital and many of the doctors and nurses that work there.

Islington has four large hospitals in the borough, none of which have safe active travel networks around them.

There is so much more we need to do in Islington but, unfortunately, the council is now slowing down the roll-out of liveable neighbourhoods which will support active travel in the borough and help reduce air pollution.

To ensure that Islington’s hospitals and medical centres are safe to access we should all encourage Islington Council to bring in these liveable neighbourhoods as soon as possible, and extensively as practicable.
