May-NHS-SADLER

Cartoon: John Sadler

• WHICHEVER party will rule after this election, this reader hopes the NHS will be adequately funded.

I was recently admitted to the Royal Free and also to UCH for treatment after a stroke. Entirely unable to walk on entry, I was sent home on Friday walking restored. The treatment by all staff there was excellent.

The NHS is an essential service. Staff come from all over to work their miracles there. They are very clever and good humoured and very patient. They work long shifts and are kept very busy.

I am concerned that by leaving the European Union they may lose their jobs. Without them the NHS would collapse, no doubt about that. It was very a foolish decision to have that referendum about membership of the EU and hopefully the decision must be reconsidered.

Today (Thursday) we decide who will govern the state. Politicians must consider the housing situation; at present rents are excessive. The right to buy “social” housing must be cancelled. Let those who can afford to buy use the private market.

An act should be drafted to protect all. It is a birthright that all are entitled to, shelter, food and the right to work. No person should be sleeping on the streets. That is barbaric.

I am elderly and remember how Britain recovered after the war. The Clement Attlee government worked miracles. Recently the massive USA loan was finally paid off.

Forbid the building of any more “luxury” housing – our city is dominated by cranes building yet more “luxury” flats. Let us respect our neighbours and hope those from elsewhere will make the effort to integrate into our society and live in peace.
