We need proportional representation

Friday, 8th April 2022

• THE reason there is very limited scrutiny in Islington is that Labour gets 98 per cent of the council’s seats with 61 per cent of the vote.

There is no relationship between the number of votes cast and the number of seats won.

That is the same mechanism through which Jeremy Corbyn in December 2019 handed an 80-seat parliamentary majority to the Tories.

That Islington Labour councillors don’t know that is a bit worrying. We need proportional representation.

The number of votes cast for a given party has to bear some resemblance to the number of seats allocated.
