Architects’ impression of Wedmore estate from 2017
• HANNA, N19, writes “…no need to destroy this lovely estate”, (Let’s have a count of people needing housing, June 5).
We are local residents and some of us attended the presentation of the new housing planned on the Wedmore estate when it took place in December 2017.
We were impressed by the plans as the blocks are in keeping with the existing buildings (see picture above) and they will be built on the car park rather than taking up precious green space.
When it is completed some residents on the estate who want to will be able to downsize to brand new accommodation, freeing up bigger flats for larger families in desperate need.
With 14,000 people on the council’s waiting list we must welcome all the new social housing we can get in the borough.
As councillors we have always taken an interest in the Whittington Park and fought to protect it and improve it. I am proud that we are managing to build this new housing.
Along with local residents we have looked at all the options to try to find an alternative site for the cabins rather that put them on the wildflower meadow.
In order to accommodate the construction workers’ portable cabins we have succeeded in temporarily relocating the lovely wildflower meadow in the park until the building is completed and the wildflower meadow will be reinstated.
The construction site will also be using mains electricity eliminating the use of generators and avoiding any further air pollution.
