Finsbury Park attack: ‘Islington will not be divided by any terrorist’

• WE are writing to thank everyone for the support they showed for our diverse, welcoming and tolerant community following the horrific terrorist attack in Finsbury Park.

Monday was a bleak day for Islington, and our thoughts continue to be with the families and friends of those affected by this terrible attack. We know you may be supporting people directly affected by the event. If there is anything that comes up as a result that you feel we can support you with, please let us know.

This is a time for us to hold firm and stand together to defend our community. Although our Muslim community has been targeted, it was the diversity and openness we hold dear that was also attacked.

We were proud to be part of the Neighbourhood Iftar Dinner at Muslim Welfare House to celebrate breaking the fast in Ramadan. We were also proud to celebrate the contribution of refugees to our community at the Assembly Hall. There is much more to unite than divide us in Islington.

We should all continue to remain vigilant in these difficult times. We are grateful to colleagues in the police for providing additional security, especially for those observing Ramadan.

We need to remember that acts of terrorism and hate are committed by a minority. If you experience hate incidents or community tensions, please report them to the police on 999 if you are at immediate risk, or else on their non-emergency number 101. Victim Support can be contacted on 0808 168 9111 or www.victimsupport.org.uk.

Islington is a vibrant and unified borough. This is our community, and we will not be divided by any terrorist. We will continue to work with you to support our community. Thank you again for standing together for Islington.
