We should reach out to communities other than our own

Friday, 3rd November 2023

• MY wife and I, both in our 80s and both white-skinned, joined thousands upon thousands of others to walk, in the
drizzle, through central London in support of peace in the Middle East.

What we encountered was, yes, some very angry people; but also acts of such kindness, love and concern from many young Muslim women.

One insisted on holding my wife’s hand when the ground underfoot became wet and slippery. Another gave her her umbrella and would not take it back because my wife might need it. There were smiles, hugs, offerings of seats outside Green Park station. And offers of water.

We live in a beautiful integrated multi-cultural, city which is being tested by events far away, but also close to many homes.

It is more important than ever that we all reach out to communities other than our own, and not be tempted to hide behind walls and shout for one side or the other.
