Jewish cemetery

The Balls Pond Road Burial Ground

• I AM the councillor referred to in Doreen Berger’s letter, (Saving the cemetery – the history, November 27).

One of the objectors suggested that the application should be rejected because it breached Jewish law.

I commented that it would be inappropriate for a Roman Catholic to adjudicate on the correct interpretation of the 613 laws of the Torah.

I went on to identify planning grounds for its refusal and I was very pleased at the subsequent turn of events.

Ms Berger is quite correct to say that at no time did Jeremy Corbyn seek to influence unduly councillors in the exercise of our quasi-statutory duties.

He has always, in my experience, been extremely supportive to those councillors who could be relied upon to carry out those duties or to represent their constituents’ interests.

That does not mean that we were unaware of his concern for the cemetery and its heritage.

There was, as I recall, almost no press coverage of the meeting, which packed the council chamber.

There was a bad-news story in one of the adjacent committee rooms, attended by very few members of the public.
