HUNDREDS of people from across the borough gathered on Sunday to share in a moment’s silence in honour of those who have lost their lives in war, writes Anna Lamche.
Wreaths were laid and speeches given as part of services in churches, parks and memorial gardens.
The Mayor of Islington, Marian Spall, laid a wreath on behalf of the borough at Islington Green, as well as Royal North Gardens near Holloway Road and Spa Green Garden in Clerkenwell.
At Islington Green, a poignant memorial service was led by Revd James Hughesdon of St Mary’s Church, Revd Nigel Williams of the Islington Veterans’ Association, and representatives of other Islington faith communities.
Leader of Islington Council, Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz, said: The turnout – especially at Islington Green – was higher than last year, and I think that reflects people are really conscious of the very present effects of war with the Ukrainian conflict. Having veterans there from those great wars and other wars too really starkly reminds us that peace isn’t a given – it’s something we must continually strive for.”
