Wedding party dance in the street!
Impromptu celebrations have the look of a Richard Curtis film as neighbours and passers-by join in with happy couple’s bash

IT could be a scene from a Richard Curtis film, with neighbours dancing in the street and passers-by joining in the fun.
Dominic and Annabel Higgins’ wedding on Saturday brought joy and laughter to Danbury Street, Angel, as their humble gathering organically grew into something bigger.
After declaring their vows and saying “I do”, the couple made their way down the road and enjoyed a lunch at the Duke of Cambridge pub.
Mrs Higgins said: “There were young lads across the road from the Duke in the flats directly in front of us who stuck their heads out of the window and were like ‘oh my God, you’ve just got married, congratulations’!
“They started playing music and that’s where it all kicked off. We had zero expectations of it being anything like that. For it to happen so naturally and organically was just the best. I hadn’t danced with friends for so long.
“People were riding down the street on their bikes and ringing their bells. A couple of cars stopped and were winding down their windows to say congratulations.
“There were quite a few people who stopped and started dancing with us.”
Mr Higgins said: “A lovely couple stopped us and gave us a bottle of champagne and we had never met them before. They were really lovely, it was awesome.”
Suzy Fogg was walking back home after getting her second dose of the Covid-19 vaccination when she noticed the impromptu street party.
She said: “They were all gathered on the street and there wasn’t very much traffic and it was wonderful. It captured how calm the streets were.
“That’s what they should be – jolly, playful, safe.”
St Peter’s ward is the first of seven low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) introduced in the borough.
The mid-trial monitoring report in March found that there was a 51 per cent rise in cycling in Wharf Road. In smaller streets in St Peter’s traffic fell by 57 per cent.
“Even people walking along were stopping,” Ms Fogg said. “There were about 15 to 20 who stopped. I hadn’t seen anyone dressed up in a while and I didn’t know anybody at the party but it was just so, so jolly.”
The couple had already cancelled two wedding dates in the past year, having originally planned to fly back to Australia where they are from to celebrate with family.
But after various lockdowns and postponements they decided to get married at St James’s Church in Prebend Street.
The couple, who have been together 12 years, previously lived in Essex Road and Canalside Square.
Mrs Higgins said: “We wanted a church wedding so I called Father John and he fitted us in.”
