Traffic jam

Constant queues of traffic moving at a snail’s pace

• WHAT is to be done about the near constant queue of traffic on St Paul’s Road approaching – at snail’s pace – Highbury Corner?

As a walker, cyclist, and public transport user I was in favour of LTNs, low traffic neighbourhoods, but it’s quite obvious that it has only diverted more traffic onto main roads which, of course, are often just as residential as side roads.

The new roundabout at Highbury Corner has made matters worse with traffic flow reduced even for buses which have no priority.

Above all there has been no discernible reduction in car use. Day after day the queue of traffic mostly comprises cars with only the driver, some of whom sit there with sound systems pumped up to 11.

Despite warnings of environmental catastrophe you might imagine people would think of making fewer car journeys. But no. The obsession with the car continues unabated. Each driver thinks everyone else is to blame.

As for Islington Council or Transport for London owning up to this planning disaster, don’t hold your breath.
