When one plague is enough
Friday, 6th November 2020
• FIRST, many thanks for your “Sir Keir Starmer / Jeremy Corbyn” Comment (New management’s divisive decision, October 30).
On the same day the Evening Standard declared the results of a recent poll indicating a shift towards the Labour Party due to the contention that Labour “is less likely… divided”!
In such a time I reluctantly find myself betraying long-held principles.
a) Not to over-personalise criticism.
b) Always to use my vote.
On the first point: Sir Keir has always brought to mind Dorothy Parker’s quip when informed of US president Calvin Coolidge’s death. She retorted: “How could they tell?”
It seems now that Sir Keir has shown signs of revival it should take the form of a thundering zombie in a period when surely one plague is enough to contend with.
With regards to the second: Whenever the next general election is, my voting intention will sadly not be consistent with my principles. For, if Jeremy Corbyn does not stand I will not cast a vote.
If however he does I will not consider voting for a candidate other than he. By that time I would hope that sense and reinstatement will have prevailed.
