Who brought peace to Europe? It wasn’t the EU
Friday, 18th August 2017
• CONSTANTINE Buhayer states that peace in Europe since the war is due to the setting up of the European Union (Our debt to the fallen, August 3). This is a myth peddled by Remainers.
Peace in Europe is due to Nato, which was set up in 1949, years before the European Economic Community came into being in 1957. Each member of Nato is pledged to defend one another. Nato covers not just member states of the EU, but also non-EU countries such as Turkey.
It’s impossible for the EU to maintain peace when it does not have an army of its own. It wants to set up one but the UK is not really interested. Why should we be? We are in Nato and an EU army would just be duplication.
