Why Greens want second vote on EU exit
Friday, 28th April 2017

Cllr Caroline Russell
• AS a local councillor and Green Party candidate for Islington North constituency, I have been listening to voters and have heard from so many who are feeling ignored and sidelined.
Seventy-eight per cent of people in Islington North voted to remain in the EU. Despite my respect for the work Jeremy Corbyn has done as our constituency MP, I feel that as Labour leader he is not listening to Islington’s views on this fundamental issue.
People are angry that he has capitulated on one of the biggest challenges of our time and is following the government down a road to economic, social and environmental disaster.
We need an effective opposition to the Tories’ extreme Brexit and the even more worrying Great Repeal Bill, which looks set to replace, remove or amend many of the social, employment and environmental protections that safeguard us all.
Greens are the only opposition to Labour on Islington Council and are leading the pro-EU argument. If elected as MP for Islington North in June, I will be calling for a second referendum on the terms of our exit and will represent the views of the 78 per cent to ensure we keep as much of our current relationship with the EU as we can.
