Why start match-day parking curbs so early?

Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium

• WITH Arsenal’s first home game of the new football season on Sunday, match-day parking controls came into play again in the vicinity of the Emirates Stadium between noon and 4.30pm.

Cohorts of parking wardens then arrived on the streets on the dot of 12 noon to dish out parking tickets to all and sundry – although the game didn’t start until four hours later.

We know the match-day parking scheme is designed to keep the roads clear and discourage football fans from arriving in cars. However, is such draconian enforcement really needed any time before, say, a couple of hours prior to kick-off time, as there is no football traffic before then?

Unless, of course, the only reason is it being another cynical revenue-raising exercise by Islington Council. And that’s to say nothing of the detrimental effect that would have had on local shops’ trade on Sunday.
