Why would Labour want to ignore its voter base?

• I WOULD be the first to admit my knowledge of socialism is somewhat incomplete but I’d always understood that such stalwarts of the left as Michael Foot and Tony Benn were as Eurosceptic as it got.

So it’s unclear to me why Rebecca Shirazi feels the left ought to be leading the campaign to overturn the Brexit referendum result, (Labour must support remain, March 28). Surely leave is what they’ve wanted for years?

And as someone who grew up in and around solid Labour constituencies, I’ve witnessed these become highly marginal over the years, if not Conservative already.

One thing they all have in common is that they all strongly backed leave. Why Labour seem determined to disregard their working-class, non-London voter base is a mystery of modern politics.
