• EMMA Goldman describes how alarming mixed-sex toilets can be for many women in her article, (Unite in defence of women’s spaces, Forum, October 28).

Bizarrely she then suggests that women should join forces with men who identify as women (trans women) to defend women’s spaces. At first glance this might seem like a kind and decent thing to do, but her arguments do not stand up to any scrutiny.

She smears the author Joanne (JK) Rowling for her much more compelling defence of women’s spaces; she quotes discredited statistics about the lifespan of trans people; and she also demonstrates a limited understanding of just what medical procedures are undertaken by men who identify as women.
