A SCHOOLBOY is off to Taiwan in a few weeks to take part in a world tournament after he was crowned Britain’s fastest 10-year-old “stacker” of plastic cups.

Wyndham Winterburn, a Year 6 pupil at Thornhill Primary School, in Barnsbury, won the title at the World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) qualifying competition last month.

Sport stacking – which involves arranging plastic cups in specific sequences or patterns in as little time as possible – took off in the 1980s as an alternative to traditional sports, to be played individually or as part of a team. It has since won a loyal following, mostly in America, Korea and China.

The WSSA, formed in 2001, holds hundreds of tournaments each year.

Wyndham will now join TeamGB at the 2017 world championships in Taiwan this Easter.

“I feel very honoured,” he said. “I’m not really aiming for the world record, just the British record. The world record is really hard, five seconds for the long pattern.”

The 10-year-old, who is a medal-winning swimmer, got into the sport after watching YouTube videos with his friend Emerson Altoff, 11.

“We came across the world record and just started stacking random cups after that. Then we got the special cups and it just went from there.”

Wyndham’s mum Harriet, 46, will be accompanying him to the championship.

“It’s amazing” she said. “After he qualified, I just thought we had to go and so we are!”

Thornhill headteacher Jenny Lewis said: “He’s really not blowing his own trumpet. We wanted to do a huge assembly for him and he was like no, no, no. He’s very humble.”
