A 56-year-old man appeared in front of a judge at the Old Bailey today (Monday), charged with the rape and murder of a schoolgirl more than 30 years ago.
James Warnock, from Harrington Street, Regent's Park, is accused of having sexually assaulted and killed Yiannoulla Yianni at her home in Belsize Road, Swiss Cottage, in August 1982.
In the past three decades, police have carried out more than a 1,000 interviews, staged reconstructions of Yiannoulla's last known movements and offered a £10,000 for information relating to her death.
Wearing a grey t-shirt, Warnock appeared via videolink from Wormswood Scrubs prison before the Recorder of London, Judge Nicholas Hilliard QC. He spoke only to confirm his name. He was arrested on Tuesday last week and charged in the early hours of Thursday.
He has been remanded in custody until trial, which is due to begin in late-June and is expected to last two to three weeks.
