Youngsters will get to see their art showcased at Central St Martins
YOUNG people from youth clubs across the borough will be showcasing their art this weekend at one of the world’s top universities.
Prospex youth club in Caledonian Road has joined forces with the Mildmay Community Centre in Dalston and Mary’s youth club in Angel to put on their first joint art exhibition at Central Saint Martins art school’s Lethaby Gallery in Granary Square.
The prestigious event opens on Saturday at 6pm and is open to the public on Sunday.
Richard Frankland, known as “Beef” to the young people at Prospex, said the collaboration came about after the Lethaby Gallery came on board.
“It went from something that was going to be in-house, and initially it was just going to be Prospex, and it grew when we got the gallery, and we said, ‘let’s get other people involved,’” Mr Frankland said.
“It’s a really exciting space. The whole of that Granary Square, there’s just a real buzz. So to see works that young people have worked hard on and to see that passion is just going to be exciting to see.”
Prospex works with around 200 young people, aged between eight and young adults, supporting them with workshops, arts and crafts and outdoor activities alongside therapeutic services.
The exhibition, called Express Yourself, will also feature work by the Islington Girls Super Group – a group of girls from youth clubs across the borough who have joined together to create art.
The show is the culmination of two months’ work and will feature a range of styles, including podcasts, spoken word and animation.
