A change in attitude could save young lives

• THERE was a tragic cases of suicide reported in the Islington Tribune (No-church prisoner hanged himself, March 24).

It struck me that for some changes in managerial attitude could have saved a life.

For those who are on the edge of despair, cigarettes, a church service, or even some kindly words of financial advice can be vital, rather than punitive measures.

A trusted prisoner, a painter, couldn’t have his cigarettes and the solace of a Catholic mass because he had trashed his cell in frustration at not being paid.

For lack of staff, he couldn’t get the support he needed. Some leeway must be found for those who are young, vulnerable or obviously in need of aid.
