A large number oppose LTNs because of the injustice involved

• THE author of the letter (Liveable neighbourhoods, the divisive issue of today, July 28) was making a lot of incorrect assumptions when trying to describe different people’s attitudes to “liveable” streets.

The evidence shows that car ownership of people living within low traffic neighbourhoods, LTNs, is increasing.

It shows that people within LTNs are walking more, and to much less extent cycling a bit more, but that the number of trips transferred from cars is limited.

The author says nothing about the increase in traffic levels LTNs have caused on many surrounding roads, for example traffic has increased by 58 per cent on Blackstock Road as a result of LTNs.

And the author says nothing about the way buses are being held up by the increased congestion on many of these roads.

And nothing about the longer journeys some severely disabled people face in their specialised transport.

In short, your correspondent shows little understanding of the injustice of LTNs and therefore the letter says nothing about the large group of people who oppose them for that reason.
