A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD from Islington has become a published author after writing a story about family, inspired by a trip to Egypt to visit relatives.
Rahaf Osman, who attends a school in Highgate, submitted her story My Family to Our Stories Our World, the UK’s first nationally curated child-led anthology.
She travelled to Egypt with her family to reunite with relatives from Sudan, where she ate traditional Sudanese food.
Rahaf said: “I wanted to write about my family because they make me feel happy and loved. I like spending time with them, especially when we’re all together.”
“I hope my story reminds other children how special family is and encourages them to learn more about their own family’s traditions and memories.”
Rahaf’s story was one of 20 featured in Our Stories Our World, created by eight-year-old literacy advocate and Guinness World Record holder Jayce Joyce, as part of his mission to inspire more children to become readers, writers and leaders.
The anthology celebrates children’s voices while exploring themes including family, belonging, culture, kindness and identity.
Jayce said: “Rahaf’s story is a beautiful reminder that every family has stories worth sharing. Through her writing she celebrates love, culture and the traditions that connect generations, while helping other children understand and appreciate different backgrounds.”
“This National Year of Reading, we’re encouraging children to swap screen time for story time.
“Every child has memories, experiences and dreams that deserve to be shared, and writing is a wonderful way to preserve them.”
