A CAFE has devised a blue and yellow striped “superfood” drink in support of Ukrainian refugees.

JOY Cafe in Holloway Road, run by husband-and-wife team Karina and Anthony Clarkson, has a new brightly-coloured smoothie on the menu.

Representing the colours of Ukraine’s flag, they have dubbed it the “Peace Smoothie”.

Ms Clarkson said: “I’m Polish, so I feel like Ukraine is part of our family. I wanted to do something more proactive and positive, because I couldn’t stop crying for the first few days. Already Poland has over 1.2 million refugees.”

“Before the war started, we had already nearly two million people working in Poland, so everybody has Ukrainian friends,” she added.

“People are opening their houses to Ukrainians, but it’s not sustainable: the effects of this war will be felt for years.”

The Clarksons are donating 50 per cent of every £6 Peace Smoothie to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis appeal.

The money will be spent on “basic necessities like food and medical care, but they’re also helping children suffering with PTSD [post-traumatic stress disorder],” Ms Clarkson said.

The Peace Smoothie is a permanent addition to the menu.

“It’s nice to have something ongoing – help will be needed for years and we have to offer some little ways to keep helping,” she said.

The smoothie’s yellow layer is a mixture of oats, chia seeds and turmeric; its blue layer is made with blue spirulina.

“Everything is organic,” Ms Clarkson said.

The smoothie, which has been on the menu for a week, has so far raised £70 for the cause.

“We hope it’s sustainable and people keep buying it,” she added. “It’s nice: you have something super good for you and you feel good for participating too.”
