Compromise is necessary in the traffic debates

‘Compromise is needed to ensure that restrictions on traffic give real benefit and that needs of those dependent on roads are properly considered’
• I CERTAINLY agree with your anonymous July 28 correspondent, who said that LTNs are a divisive issue, although not with the conclusions, (Liveable neighbourhoods, the divisive issue of today).
The groups were selected to suit the purposes of the argument and ignore those worst affected, particularly those on boundary roads, businesses, service providers including delivery drivers and builders. It is also assumed that drivers do not have a valid use for their car, which may be essential for their work.
In the proposed LTN for Highbury East, bus services seem likely to be badly impacted by increased congestion in the boundary roads, something that affects nearly everybody.
The other issue is that the claimed benefits for most residents in already quiet areas, like Barnsbury or Highbury East, will be minimal but the negative impacts for some will be very great, although they may be a minority.
There is no sign that the council is taking any notice of this. But we can hope from the quote (on another issue) from a council adviser,“…we need to at least make it look like we are listening”, (Ice rink campaigners’ anger at email leak, July 7).
For the community not to be divided about such issues, compromise is needed to ensure that restrictions on traffic give real benefit and that needs of those dependent on roads are properly considered.
