Create civic space with a long-overdue road closure

Friday, 21st July 2023

• THE debate about road closures continues but the road closure that, it seems to me, would benefit by far the largest number, and which was fixed council policy about 30 years ago, never now seems seriously to be considered: the pedestrianisation of Liverpool Road between Tolpuddle Street (which was actually built to enable this to happen) and Chapel Market.

The benefits of this could be judged a few years ago when that short length of street was closed to allow renewal of the water mains – the commercial heart of Islington could become a civic space.

It was defeated by a pop-up campaign to “Save our Streets” and by the needless fears of some market traders that deliveries would be impeded.

Rather, access to the market for shoppers would be much improved. A solution for the light bus usage could be found.

Rather than inconvenience residents elsewhere by further closures of already quiet streets, there is surely here an opportunity for a major civic improvement.
