MARATHON MAN

‘Is it safe?’: Laurence Olivier and Dustin Hoffman in Marathon Man

With ties as wide as the sky itself, clunky typewriters whose keys made the earth shake, and haircuts so big they obscured the sun but not the story, the Dustin Hoffman/Robert Redford 1970s classic All The President’s Men feels utterly contemporary – and with another rogue Republican in the White House, the screening of the film about Nixon, Watergate and the Washington Post’s reporters Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodford is a must-see.

The BFI is laying on this treat as part of a Dustin Hoffman season, so think about the back catalogue and sigh with joy: of course, his breakthrough 1967 coming-of-age tragi-comedy The Graduate (“Benjamin! I have ONE word to say to you: PLASTICS!”) has a long run all of its own, but how about watching that criminally under-shown masterpiece Marathon Man, which sees him line up with Roy Scheider and Laurence Olivier, on the big screen? Straw Dogs, Midnight Cowboy, Tootsie and Rain Man also feature throughout July. See: www.bfi.org.uk/whats-on

• This week marks the start of the 8th Bagri Foundation London Indian Film Festival, which takes place at the BFI and runs for a week (June 22-29). The organisers say they seek to challenge the stereotypes of India and South Asia, and the that they are the “punk rock of Indie cinema”. With a wide ranging bill, expect a lot more than classic Bollywood sing-a-longs. See www.londonindianfilmfestival.co.uk
