Do black people not join the Labour Party here?

Friday, 1st April 2022

• I WAS really inspired by the March 25 letter from Tamuka Mapoto, because I share her frustration with the silly infighting in the local Labour Party.

I am also a black woman living in Islington and I am glad to see the diversity of councillors that Labour now has and it’s great that we have a mixed-race woman as council leader.

But this does not make me want to join my local party because I worry that at any meeting I would be one of a few black people in attendance, which is scary.

I am following the Labour Campaign teams on Twitter and what has struck me from their photographs is that aside from the BAME candidates all the campaigners seem to be white people! Do black people not join the party round here?

No one at my church would ever think about joining, even though we love Jeremy Corbyn.

I once went to a Labour Party social function in Holloway and everyone was very nice; but several were sure they had met me before, which they hadn’t.

It was a real shame to think that even socialists think that all black people look the same.
