How can an opposition party work like that?

Friday, 21st June 2024

• IN two weeks we will be having a general election and the choice is simple.

Jeremy Corbyn would have rather remained as our Labour MP. Still, because of Sir Keir Starmer and various other people in Labour, he wasn’t allowed to stand for the party, so he is standing as an independent.

Over the last 41 years he has achieved a lot for Islington and increased his majority every time.

He saved the A & E department at the Whittington Hospital with the help of the Defend the Whittington Hospital Campaign led by Shirley Franklin and many others, saved the No 4 bus route from being cancelled in conjunction with the Islington Pensioners Forum, and also saved the railway ticket offices from closing down.

There’s no doubt that he is a hard-working constituency MP and I would like to see him continue as an independent, because what does the Labour Party offer with their candidate Praful Nargund, the complete opposite of Jeremy Corbyn?

I believe he won’t protect the NHS from further privatisation, he will make sure it happens.

Also, Nargund has yet to appear at a hustings. This is what happens when you have a leader of the opposition imposing a candidate on the party.

I do not doubt that Starmer could become the next prime minister but the loss of one Labour MP is a price worth paying just to keep a future Labour government in check.

I resigned from the Labour Party in December 2023 and my mother was recently expelled from the party for supporting Corbyn’s independent campaign.

But we still get asked to donate to the Labour Party. How can an opposition party work like that?
