THE TOWN Hall’s only opposition councillor Caroline Russell was arrested while part of a protest calling for the Prime Minister to halt the suspension of Parliament ahead of the UK leaving the EU.
Cllr Caroline Russell, who represents Highbury East ward, was reportedly arrested after sitting in the street near the entrance to Downing Street today (Saturday). According to those who were with her, Cllr Russell is currently at Charing Cross police station but it is not yet known if she will be charged and for what.
Protests have taken place across the country against Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s move to prorogue Parliament until the middle of October.
Most accept this move is to prevent issues around Brexit being debated in Parliament to pave the way for the UK to leave the EU with “no deal.
Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn spoke at a rally in Glasgow where he said people are demonstrating because they are “angered” and “outraged”.
But Mr Johnson and his allies in the Conservative party have said suspending Parliament is normal procedure after a new Government has been formed and there will be enough time to debate matters related to Brexit when MPs return after the five week suspension.
The Met said they do not comment on individuals who have been arrested but said three people have been arrested today at today’s protest in London.
