Jamaly Samba Baibu was stabbed in Seward Street
THE grieving family of a teenage boy who was stabbed to death just before Christmas have launched a fundraiser to cover his funeral costs, as they paid tribute to “his caring nature and the smile he would bring”.
Jamaly Samba Baibu, 16, was one of two boys to be stabbed in Seward Street, in Bunhill, on December 20.
The other boy survived, but Jamaly tragically died at the scene.
Jamaly’s older sister Joyce Twumasi recently launched a fundraising campaign to help meet the costs of “laying Jamaly to rest”.
Ms Twumasi said she hoped to give her brother “the send off that he deserves following his untimely death”.
The fundraiser, posted to the site GoFundMe, had yesterday (Thursday) raised £1,815 toward a target of £8,000.
“Jamaly was loved and cared for by many,” Ms Twumasi wrote.
“Everyone he encountered has spoken of his caring nature and the smile he would bring – that was my Jamaly.”
She added: “It is a stressful time for the family and as you can imagine, totally unexpected.
“Fly high little brother, fly high!”
A week after the stabbing, a 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder and bailed shortly afterwards, pending further investigation.
On December 30, another 16-year-old boy was charged with murder and grievous bodily harm after arriving back in the UK at Gatwick Airport.
Detective Chief Inspector Kate Kieran, who is leading the investigation into the teenager’s death, said at the time: “Jamaly had his whole life ahead of him. Our thoughts are with his family as they come to terms with this terrible loss. We will do all we can to support them.
“As we work to piece together what happened in Seward Street, I appeal to any members of the public who were in the area, who saw or heard anything unusual or who have any information at all about what took place, to come forward.”
DCI Kieran added: “Anyone who was driving nearby, particularly along either Seward Street or Central Street, please check any dash-cam footage that you might have captured of the incident or of other significant activity.
“We know there were also members of the public who came to the aid of both boys after they were assaulted. Some did not provide their details and we would very much like to speak to them.”
Anyone with information has been urged to call police on 101, with the reference 7708/21Dec. Information can also be provided to Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
