My cat would still be alive if speed limit was in force

• ISLINGTON Council is guilty of negligence by removing “5mph speed limit” and “residents’ parking only” signs, deliberately opening the floodgates for non-residents to park and rat-run on the road at Holly Park estate, punishing 251 residents for their complaints against the council’s oppressive policy.

We were told by the council health and safety officer that the road is safe, but despite our requests, the council has never produced any report. My smart, beautiful and intelligent cat was the victim of a hit-and-run on Friday. Had the council not deliberately removed the speed limit sign then my cat would be alive today.

My concern is that our children are not safe on our estate road. I reported this to police and was advised to contact the council. Instead of dealing with the complaint, the council is deliberately pitting residents against each other by making them fight it out for a parking space and compete with non-residents.

It is fuelling competition for parking spaces and creating a cash cow by turning the residents’ car park into a commercial car park. To do this, the council is endangering the lives and limbs of our most vulnerable members, elderly people, pets and children.

The council is further guilty of endangering lives and limbs by way of encouraging vehicles to rat-run and allowing more than 50 abandoned vehicles to be left in the residents’ car park.

Many of these vehicles are parked indiscriminately, obstructing emergency access. If a fire occurs, people will burn to death because fire engines cannot reach our building due to vehicles parked unlawfully. Bins have not been collected for more than a week, releasing a toxic and foul smell.

We have made complaints to the council by signed petition but were again told that its health and safety officer has inspected and that everything is safe. In spite of repeated requests, the council refuses to provide a copy of the inspector’s report. The council should deal with the complaint, and get it sorted it out as a matter of urgency and without passing the buck.
