Ofwat must challenge Thames Water on its record

Caedmon Road flood

Caedmon Road was left submerged with water

• I COULD not agree more with the demand in your lead story that Thames Water pour money into tackling the floods, (As homes and businesses are swamped again, how can flood misery keep happening? August 12).

Another, albeit smaller, leak has been bubbling merrily away in St Paul’s Road over the past week or so, between Harecourt Road and Wallace Road.

Also a week or so ago Thames Water contractors dug two holes at this location as there was already a leak. One hole has been filled in and the other had a manhole cover fitted over it.

As I write, there must be hundreds of gallons of water per hour going into the gutter there and running down into Wallace Road and continuing down St Paul’s Road towards Essex Road, Balls Pond Road, and Newington Green.

It appears that Thames Water is quite happy to let this continue but are also quite happy to threaten people with a £1,000 fine for daring to use a hosepipe to water a garden or wash a car.

But, then, what else do we expect from one of the water utilities which has one of the worst water leakage rates, but would rather pay out huge dividends than repair leaking water pipes?

It’s a pity that Ofwat, the so-called water regulatory body, does not pull Thames Water up about this and fine them until they sort out these leaks.
