Palestine: Heritage and hospitality at sold-out supper club
Dinners are a way to experience the country’s culture through its food

MEMORIES of a childhood in Gaza are infused into every dish at a new sold-out supper club keeping Palestinian heritage, history and culture alive in London.
Organised by Faten Hajaji, who runs Archway’s Cafe Metro with her husband Mahmoud, the dinners are a space for solidarity with Palestine and a way to experience the country’s culture through its food.
Her plan was to host just three events over three weeks, but when they all sold out before the first evening had even begun, Ms Hajaji decided to continue holding the supper club every week from now on.
She said: “I’ve lost many of my relatives in the recent war, and all our family homes were destroyed. Now I live in London, but my heart and soul remain with my family there. I wanted to do something from here. I organise these dinners to share our story in a different way – through food. Every bite carries a message that we, as Palestinians, have a history, a culture and an identity, and we are still holding on to life despite the devastation.”
Supported by her husband and “sisters” at Islington’s Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Ms Hajaji cooks everything on the menu herself. Naturally, it is all Palestinian – maqluba, musakhan, hummus, moutabal, falafel, and sayadiyah, which is grilled fish with spiced rice.
Dessert is handmade baklava, kanafeh – a sweet, cheesy pastry – and “Gaza Chocolate”, another of Ms Hajaji’s own specialities, raising money to send to her family in Gaza.
Faten’s Supper Club is held every Wednesday evening and costs £35 per person. Visit Cafe Metro’s Instagram account, @cafemetro19, for details and booking.
