A CHARITY is fighting to keep the performing arts classes inclusive as funding for drama, dance and music lessons is at risk.
The Angel Shed in Caledonian Road has been running after-school workshops and sessions teaching theatre, music and dance for more than 20 years.
Director David Mabbott told the Tribune: “There aren’t enough arts opportunities full stop. And those that are available are often paid or pay for access.
“The idea is to introduce children and young people of all backgrounds to things they haven’t done before. That is our reason for existing. The ideas come from them. They create it, they create the characters, the storylines, literally everything.”
He added: “Young people need to experience everything to know what they can achieve and what’s possible for them. It’s a problem with the arts, broadly, so many people only get into it because they know someone. All those young people who don’t have those connections – how do they know it’s for them?”
They produce an end-of-term show where all the work is put on at a professional theatre.
Mr Mabbott said 80 per cent of Angel Shed members are from low-income families, about 50 per cent have special educational needs or have a disability.
He added: “There are things we just refuse to cut back on – for example, the access support workers for disabled young people is just so important and necessary.
“Particularly for those less privileged, how do you get the experience you need to apply for jobs or training without that? That is our next big step and what we are raising funds to make happen.”
Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn is also a fan of the charity’s work. He told the Tribune: “Angel Shed theatre is a fantastic space that empowers young people of all abilities and backgrounds to express themselves.
“At every performance I have had the pleasure to attend, I can see just how big a difference this theatre makes to our community, which is testament to the dedication of the wonderful staff. As a proud patron of the theatre, I will continue supporting them in any way I can. There is creativity in all of us, and everyone should be given the opportunity to fulfil their potential.”
