Putting up posters can be vandalism too

• REGARDING the letter from D Wheeler (Removal of posters is an act of vandalism, October 20), I think there is a basic misunderstanding of the law going on here.

The A3 and A4 laminated posters put up in Barnsbury recently, urging people to oppose the proposed LTN, low traffic neighbourhood, scheme, are themselves unlawful.

Fly-posting, unless authorised by the council, is illegal and comes under the same category as other anti-social activities such as fly-tipping and dog-fouling.

It costs the council money to deal with these things which we all have to pay for in our council tax. Putting posters in your own windows or on your own railings is fine, but not on property such as lamp-posts and trees.

Those behind the posters may feel they have a case to argue but illegally fly-posting isn’t the way to go about it. What’s to stop any and every pressure group or company wanting to promote their business doing the same? Soon our neighbourhood would be plastered with unsightly rubbish.

So removing these posters isn’t an act of vandalism; but putting them up in the first place certainly is.
