A ROBOT called Hugo is the latest addition to the surgical team at the Whittington Hospital.

The new machine arrived in Archway this week and is designed to help surgeons perform procedures with more precision and less pain for the patient.

The doctors can control the robot from a nearby console and manoeuvre its slim, jointed arms while having a clear, 3D view of everything happening inside the body they are operating on.

Hugo was delivered in a lorry before being assembled in one of the hospital theatres, and will be used for the first time later in the spring.

Professor Chetan Parmar, a clinical director at the Whittington, said: “This is a real step forward for Whittington Health’s patients, and it is great that we are bringing this advanced technology to Archway. It will mean safer, more precise procedures with faster recovery times and shorter stays in hospital for our patients, which is better for them and will also make our services more efficient.”
