An ill-founded attack on the local Labour Party

Friday, 11th March 2022

• IT was a shame to read the ill-founded attack on the local Labour Party in Robert Arthur Martin’s letter, (Labour is far less ‘toxic’, March 4).

He claims quite wrongly that the selection of Labour members to stand as candidates in the upcoming local elections was dependant on their views about Islington North’s MP Jeremy Corbyn.

A lot of hard work went in to ensure that Islington Labour’s selection processes were scrupulously fair to all applicants and thoroughly democratic.

Each candidate faced an interviewing panel chaired by a senior Labour member from outside the borough (a member who had generally been suggested by the Labour Party’s regional office). What “side” of the Labour Party the applicants came from was not an issue and generally not known.

We are lucky enough to have selected a wide variety of excellent Labour candidates standing for election in Islington who, once elected, will work together with Islington’s two hard-working MPs in order to support all Islington residents and improve their lives.

Others may seek to “divide and rule” but our candidates are seeking to “unite and serve”.
